Description:
At some point in time, some computer geek assigned numbers to various error messages, because we like keeping a record of mistakes so that we can point the blame at someone else when it comes up, and know exactly what they did wrong. 404 was picked to represent the "page not found" error.
Literal Meaning:
We can't find the page you requested, because of one of three reasons:
- We moved it somewhere else.
- You typed it differently than expected. (Actually, you probably typed it wrong, but we're trying to be nice).
- You came here from somewhere else, like Google, and they haven't checked out our site in a while, so they don't know where stuff is now. Eventually the Google Geeks will update their site, and you won't see this page. Unless of course, see #2.
